Stornoway Gazette, 2 February 1940
It was with deep regret that the people of Leurbost learned of the death of John Daniel Macleod, son of John Macleod, 9 New Holdings, Leurbost. After leaving Leurbost School, he proceeded to the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway, but on the completion of his second year he had to leave because of ill-health. Born 22 years ago, like most of the young men of the island, with the call of the sea in their blood, he joined the RNR some eighteen months ago and he was the first to volunteer from the village for the King's Review last July. Since then he served on board the "Exmouth" and when he was expected home on his first leave since July, his parents received the sad news of his death. Of a quiet, gentle and unassuming nature, John Daniel was loved by everyone who came in contact with him. He will be missed by young and old alike, but especially by the young who will always remember his cheery smile and gentle nature. We who knew him well will mourn his loss. The heartfelt sympathy of the whole district is extended to his sorrowing parents, brothers and sisters.
