Stornoway Gazette, 8 December 1939
Following the loss of HM Armed Liner "Rawalpindi" news has been received that Donald (Dollan) Macarthur, second son of Mr and Mrs Murdo Macarthur, 10 Cromore, is missing. Donald was among the many young men who so unflinchingly flocked to the colours at the outbreak of hostilities, and we are today mourning a capable and efficient young life, taken from us, we fear, at the early age of 19 years. Of him it could truly be said that he was "plucked like a flower in bloom". His bright and cheerful disposition was an inspiration to young and old, and those who knew in intimately had the highest esteem for his sterling qualities. True, the hour calls for preparedness for great sacrifices, yet that does not minimise the severity of the blow inflicted by the loss of those near and dear to us. Though some are reported to have been picked up by the "Deutschland", the chance is a slender one, and the sympathy of the whole community is extended to the stricken parents, brothers and sisters.
