Murdo gillies, 36 South Shawbost

Stornoway Gazette, 9 January 1942

BQMS Murdo Gillies, Royal Artillery, aged 31 years, son of Mr and Mrs Donald Gillies, 8 Minto Street, Greenock (formerly of 36 South Shawbost), was called up at the outbreak of war and promoted BQMS in July 1940. He was later recommended for a Commission, but was drafted to the Middle East in December 1940, where he is now reported to have been killed by enemy action in September 1941. He has two younger brothers on active service, Donald in the army and Donald William in the Navy, while his eldest brother, Angus, has an important job with the Admiralty. To them and to his griefstricken parents and only sister, we extend our deepest sympathy.
