Donald M Macdonald, 2/4 Kershader

Stornoway Gazette, 30 January 1942
The sad news of the death through enemy action of Donald Murdo Macdonald, merchant navy, has been received by his parents at 2/4 Kershader. Donald Murdo was 36 years of age. He left home 15 years ago to follow the calling of the sea. During that period he visited many and distant quarters of the globe. He was of a quiet and shy disposition yet possessed of a real sense of humour and unexpected wit. He had made his home in South Shields where his wife, a native of Thurso, resides. To her and to the bereaved parents, the deepest sympathy is extended. He has two brothers and a sister on service - Iain in the Navy, Kenneth in the Army and Nora in forestry. His first voyages were made with his cousin, Captain John Macleod of Kershader, who was then in command of one of the Blue Star Line steamers. Sad to relate, the news of Captain Macleod's daeth at his home in Cardiff at the comparatively early age of 55, was received just two or three weeks ago. Capt Macleod, while a youth, served for a time in the regular army, having been a piper first in the Seaforths and then in the Black Watch. On leaving the army, he took up a seafaring career and succeeded so well that ultimately he had command of one of his company's best steamers. Some years ago he was made Shore Superintendent by the Company at Seattle and other ports of call, but failing health compelled him recently to return to his home at Cardiff. He is survived by his wife and a son, to whom the deepest sympathy is extended.
